Save These Dates:
Saturday May 3rd, 2008 Singer-Songwriter Judy Fjell is definitely “one-of-a-kind.” Not only are her musical gifts considerable, but they are easily matched by her generosity and energy as a performer and social activist. In addition, there’s no shortage of humor in her concerts! Audiences may find themselves laughing about things they never knew were funny, or thinking about things in a new light, thanks to her stories and songs. Some of her lyrics and melodies quietly carry listeners to the wide open spaces of Montana. Others convey a strong message for compassion and justice - for the planet and for the human race. She has sung for San Francisco peace marches, NOW conferences, Montana Cowboy Poetry Gatherings, GLBT Pride in Boise, New York City coffeehouses, the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival, the Northwest Regional Folklife festival in Seattle, rural school students in northern California, senior citizens in Carmel, Unitarian-Universalist fellowships, Methodist churches, women’s spirituality groups, concerts in Japan working against domestic violence . . . It’s been quite a ride! Judy has written well over a hundred songs and recorded 15 albums on her own label, Honey Pie Music, since 1980. She has a well-earned reputation as a multi-level “Musical Activist,” having empowered hundreds to find their singing voices. She is the founding director of Music Empowerment Camps (since 1986), Women Making Music Retreats (since 1991), the Canta Bella Women's Chorus (since 1996), and the Montana Women's Chorus (since 1997). DOUBLE CD RELEASE PARTY! Driftwood Fire and the Boulder Acoustic Society with very special guest Liz Barnez! Thursday, May 15th,
2008 7pm Rooted strongly in the Appalachian folk tradition; infused with jazz inspired complexity, and delivered with the finesse of classically trained musicians, Driftwood Fire is an accomplished group with a mesmerizing sound. Driftwood Fire's founding members, Lynn Scharf and Charlotte Formichella, were top finalists in Denver's Blue Note singer/songwriter contest. Driftwood Fire has recently shared the stage with members of the Lonesome River Band, The Johnson Mountain Boys, and Union Station. Members of the band have also performed with Sir Elton John, Lisa Regan of the Washington National Opera, and the Moscow Ballet. Charlotte and Lynn were raised in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia where they received classical training in guitar and voice while playing in community bluegrass and fiddling circles. Charlotte went on to attend workshops in contemporary guitar at the Berklee School of Music, while Lynn spent four years training with professional opera singers in the Washington DC area. In 2007 Driftwood Fire began performing and arranging with Julliard-trained bassist and jazz pianist, Jennifer Quan. Driftwood Fire also performs and records with various percussionists, including professional percussionists JJ Jones (Ellis) and Josh Vogeler (White Rabbits). Their new CD is hot off the press and ready for you! The Boulder Acoustic Society (BAS)
